GreenLED — Alphen aan den Rijn pioneers safe rainwater reuse for urban greening

Problems solved: Heat stress and flooding in dense city centre, seasonal mismatch between rainfall and irrigation demand, unsustainable potable water use for green infrastructure, limited underground storage space, water safety requirements for close-contact urban use
Rainwater reused for: Irrigation of green roofs and facades
Impact: 15 million liters/year of drinking water saved; 50,000 m² of green roofs and facades supplied; rainwater captured from 31,000 m² of paved surfaces
Maassluis redirects stormwater underground using gravity-fed infiltration to reduce sewer load and flooding

Rotterdam Zoo collects rainwater from its main square to irrigate plants and cut dependence on drinking water and groundwater

Rotterdam turns a city street into an underground freshwater reserve

Rainwater reused for: Deep underground storage; children's interactive hand pump; public demonstration

The Hague turns park stormwater into a local water source for gardens and urban farming
