Problems solved: Heat stress and flooding in dense city centre, seasonal mismatch between rainfall and irrigation demand, unsustainable potable water use for green infrastructure, limited underground storage space, water safety requirements for close-contact urban use
Rainwater reused for: Irrigation of green roofs and facades
Impact: 15 million liters/year of drinking water saved; 50,000 m² of green roofs and facades supplied; rainwater captured from 31,000 m² of paved surfaces
Rotterdam turns a city street into an underground freshwater reserve
Client: Municipality of Rotterdam
Year: 2020–2021
Problems: Sewer overflow, climate-proofing city centre, public water awareness / education
Rainwater reused for: Deep underground storage; children's interactive hand pump; public demonstration
Impact: 4,000 m³/year reused; 10,000 m³ stored; 1,200 m² catchment
